The FAQ’s About Feral Hog Bait

As with any new product, we know there will be a lot of questions and we are happy to help answer any you may have!

Feral Hog Bait is a new Special Limited Use product. This warfarin-based pesticide is specifically designed for the eradication of feral hogs in Texas. The blue wafer form of Hog Bait ensures a safe and effective method for pest removal. Classified as a Category IV pesticide, it is approved for use in specialized designated feeders targeting small hog populations in Texas.

The active ingredient in this anticoagulant bait is 0.005% Warfarin. It is designed to only affect feral hogs in that it can only be placed in a specialized feeder. The certified user must train the hogs to eat out of these feeders and all livestock must be removed according to State law during the process.

The product contains a fat-soluble dye that will turn the internal fatty tissues of hogs blue after consuming the bait, becoming visible within three hours. This dye will be noticeable to any hunter who may harvest a hog that has consumed the product. This is a benefit provided only by Kaput Hog Bait.

To purchase and use this product, the end-user must hold a Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) Private, Commercial, or Non-commercial applicator license. Furthermore, completing a short online training is mandatory to ensure a thorough understanding of the product’s correct application.

Under the Texas Pesticide Law, individuals are prohibited from using restricted or state-limited-use pesticides and regulated herbicides without proper licensing or certification from the Texas Department of Agriculture. Applicators must maintain records of pesticide applications for a minimum of two years. Commercial applicators must be insured and register their pesticide equipment. Continuing education units (CEUs) are mandatory for all applicators to renew their licenses.

As with any chemical, the applicator MUST read all labels before using the product. Here are some of the reasons why Feral Hog Bait is one of the safest products you can use to get rid of feral hogs in Texas.

  • It has a low toxicity, which means it has decreased risk to non-targets (both from primary and secondary exposure.)
  • There is an antidote that is readily available: Vitamin K-1
  • Feral Hog Bait’s half-life is 42 hours, so the hogs will quickly metabolize the pellets.

In order for the feral hogs to eat these pellets, you must train them to use a specialized feeder.

  • First, find where the hogs may be located.
  • Next, remove livestock from that area or install a temporary fence around the feeder area.
  • Place the feeders in areas where you know they may rest.
  • Feed the hogs with non-toxic corn that contains a hog attractant. Do this for 1-3 weeks.

After this, the hogs should be eating from some or all of the feeders and you can continue the baiting process.

Monitor the feeders every 2-4 days and make sure the hogs are feeding on the bait. Remove any wasted bait or bait that has been spilled. Refill the feeders as needed.
